Cancellation Policy:
Rare circumstances might force you to cancel your clinic date. If you need to undo your signup, please do so at least a week in advance. If you need to cancel less than a week before your shift, you are expected to find a replacement and contact the scheduled clinic manager. Anyone who fails to follow this procedure will be asked not to volunteer again at The Monday Clinic. By signing up to volunteer, you make a commitment to patients, physicians, and other students. Please honor that commitment.
If you ever need to cancel, visit this page and click on the date you signed up. This will remove your name from the volunteer roster.
MS1:
First-year students will work as part of the health care team to learn the basics of patient interaction and medical care. They will work alongside the second-year students to obtain the vital signs, history, and physical. They will practice patient interviews and history taking along with vital signs as they feel comfortable. They will also assist in presenting the case to the attending physician and in making decisions on the treatment plan.
MS2:
Second-year students will guide the vitals, history, and physical exam process during the initial part of the patient visit. They will assist and teach the first-years through the patient history and refine their own skills in physical exam. They will then consult with the senior medical student and follow-up in obtaining any additional information necessary to complete the history and physical before presenting to the attending physician.
MS1/MS2 Backup:
MS1 or MS2 backups will serve as just that. They will not come to the clinic unless they have been notified by an MS1 or MS2 that can no longer attend his or her assigned day. We have added this spot to make it easier to find replacements for each Monday night. If you have signed up as a backup, please realize that you may or may not be volunteering for that night. MS1s and MS2s that would like to volunteer more than once per month can do so in this manner.
MS3/MS4:
Senior medical students will be responsible for guiding the overall care of patients who come to The Monday Clinic. First- and second-year students will present their history and physical exam findings to the senior medical student, who will then work with them to refine the differential diagnosis and solidify a treatment plan. The senior medical student will listen when the other students present the case to the attending physician and will provide additional information relevant to the case, as needed.
Intake/Discharge:
The intake/discharge staff will be responsible for proper registration and triage of all patients who come to the clinic. They will ensure that the patients fully fill out the pertinent paperwork, and the staff will subsequently enter their information into the electronic medical records system. The staff will also assist in patient discharge and ensure that proper record of the visit is made in the records system. These students will primarily be premedical undergraduate students and should arrive at 4:45 pm on the appropriate clinic day to be trained.
Translator:
Roles of the interpreters include assisting with patient registration, facilitating communication between patients and physicians during the medical visit, making phone calls as needed to report lab tests, and explaining services available outside the NDSM clinic. While interpreters should only accept assignments consistent with their language fluency, the use of dictionaries?especially for medical terminology?is encouraged. Please note that students fluent in Spanish are welcome to sign up either for medical or translation positions.
Intake Manager:
The I/D Manager will oversee the intake and triage process and be available to answer questions and address problems that may arise during patient registration. They will also receive each patient?s chart before the patient is discharged and review the chart to assure that everything has been done according to the standards of the clinic, that the patient clearly understands their treatment plan, and that the proper protocol is followed for any referral given for follow-up care.
Medical Manager: The Medical Manager is ultimately responsible for all operations of the clinic for the evening. They will begin by overseeing the student orientation at the beginning of the evening and then move to managing the medical operations of the clinic once patients begin to be seen. The clinic managers will be responsible for all in-house labs and as well as the protocol for outsourced lab work. In addition, the Clinic Managers will complete all administrative and data collection responsibilities before the clinic closes each night.
Attending Physician:
Physicians will assist with the healthcare needs of the underserved population of North Dallas, as well as serve as educators and mentors to medical students. They will oversee student-directed care by serving as attending physicians. Teams of medical students will present their patients to the attending physician, as if on rounds. Attending physicians will then help guide the medical students through their assessments and treatment plans.
